UAE Road Safety for Cyclists, Drivers and Pedestrians

Adherence to the UAE traffic laws is important to ensure the safety of drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and people of determination.

The UAE has established several traffic laws to ensure safe travels by all road users.

How to be a responsible cyclist according to Article (16) of Traffic Law No. (21) of 1995

  •   Keep on the right side of the road.

  •   Do not ride on the pavement.

  •   If bicycle lanes are available, you must stay within the lane and not leave it, except when necessary.

  •   Ride one behind the other, unless circumstances require otherwise.

  •   Do not use the support of any other vehicle to move or drag your bicycle.

  • Bicycles are limited to one rider per bicycle. Do not take passengers.

  • The cyclist must wear a protective helmet.

      

The law under Article (17) of Traffic Law No. (21) of 1995 provides the guidelines for cyclists on what not to do.

•       Whether riding a bicycle or driving a motorcycle, the cyclist must hold the handlebars with both hands. It is prohibited for a cyclist to ride without holding the handlebars, or with only one hand, except when giving a hand signal.

•       Cyclists should not swerve or ride erratically on the road. They should also not accelerate dangerously or move in any manner that poses a danger to the public.

 The law under Article (17) of Traffic Law No. (21) of 1995 states that, subject to the stipulated exceptions, it is mandatory for drivers of motor vehicles to have a driving licence.

 •       No person is allowed to drive any motor vehicle on the road, unless they hold a valid driving licence issued by the licencing authority.The driving licence should authorise the type of vehicle that is being driven.

•       To drive motorcycles, a motorcycle driving licence is required, which is granted for driving all types of motorcycles.

General Guidelines for Road Safety

•       Carry a valid and appropriate driving licence for the type of vehicle used.

•       Adhere to traffic laws and regulations, including speed limits, signals, and right of way.

•       Do not use the mobile phone or any other distraction while driving.

•       Maintain a valid vehicle registration and licencing. Do not drive expired vehicles.

•       Ensure vehicle is technically fit for road use (brakes, tires, lights, signals, glass, etc.).

•       Use designated pedestrian crossings and do not cross in unsafe locations.

•       Follow pedestrian traffic signals and do not cross when the light is red.

•       Do not endanger yourself or others by crossing suddenly or irregularly.

•       Follow instructions issued by police and traffic officers.

•       Demonstrate civilised behaviour and respect others.

•       Preserve lives and property.

•       Co-operate with the relevant authorities and report traffic hazards.
